I<\/strong><\/p>\n

Who would be
\nA mermaid fair,
\nSinging alone,
\nCombing her hair
\nUnder the sea,
\nIn a golden curl
\nWith a comb of pearl,
\nOn a throne?<\/p>\n

II<\/strong><\/p>\n

I would be a mermaid fair;
\nI would sing to myself the whole of the day;
\nWith a comb of pearl I would comb my hair;
\nAnd still as I comb’d I would sing and say,
\n‘Who is it loves me? who loves not me?’
\nI would comb my hair till my ringlets would fall
\nLow adown, low adown,
\nFrom under my starry sea-bud crown
\nLow adown and around,
\nAnd I should look like a fountain of gold
\nSpringing alone
\nWith a shrill inner sound
\nOver the throne
\nIn the midst of the hall;
\nTill that great sea-snake under the sea
\nFrom his coiled sleeps in the central deeps
\nWould slowly trail himself sevenfold
\nRound the hall where I sate, and look in at the gate
\nWith his large calm eyes for the love of me.
\nAnd all the mermen under the sea
\nWould feel their immortality

But at night I would wander away, away,
\nI would fling on each side my low-flowing locks,
\nAnd lightly vault from the throne and play
\nWith the mermen in and out of the rocks;
\nWe would run to and fro, and hide and seek,
\nOn the broad sea-wolds in the crimson shells,
\nWhose silvery spikes are nighest the sea.
\nBut if any came near I would call and shriek,
\nAnd adown the steep like a wave I would leap
\nFrom the diamond-ledges that jut from the dells;
\nFor I would not be kiss’d by all who would list
\nOf the bold merry mermen under the sea.
\nThey would sue me, and woo me, and flatter me,
\nIn the purple twilights under the sea;
\nBut the king of them all would carry me,
\nWoo me, and win me, and marry me,
\nIn the branching jaspers under the sea.
\nThen all the dry-pied things that be
\nIn the hueless mosses under the sea
\nWould curl round my silver feet silently,
\nAll looking up for the love of me.
\nAnd if I should carol aloud, from aloft
\nAll things that are forked, and horned, and soft
\nWould lean out from the hollow sphere of the sea,
\nAll looking down for the love of me.<\/p>\n
